biography
Dan Bernitt is a writer and performer. His solo performances include Phi Alpha Gamma; Thanks for the Scabies, Jerkface!; Swan Balloon; The Gayer Show (with Les Kurkendaal); and Moments of Disconnect; and they have been featured in venues internationally: from Minneapolis and Cape Cod to New York and Dublin. He has appeared on public radio stations from Kansas City to Provincetown, as well as a segment for NPR's Studio 360. He has received multiple grants and fellowships from the Kentucky Center for the Arts/Toyota, the University of Kentucky, and the Kentucky Arts Council; most recently, he held a three-month artist residency at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. A recipient of the Robert Chesley Award for Gay Playwriting, both his books, Dose: Plays & Monologues and Phi Alpha Gamma, were named finalists for the Lambda Literary Award.
He holds a BA (summa cum laude) in Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky and an MFA in Playwriting from The New School. As a teaching artist, he has held residencies at Kalamazoo College, Earlham College, Simon's Rock College of Bard, Miami University of Ohio, and the University of Kentucky. He has also worked with young artists in summer writing programs at Adelphi University and the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts, where, for four summers, he was assistant faculty for the creative writing program. He has twice spoken to fourth-graders about the differences between non-profit and for-profit organizations.
He lives in Brooklyn.
